A beer? At the Chocolate Sellers? Yes, and what a beer!
A beer that brings together a lot for us. A beer that we ourselves appreciate immensely, how delicious and special it has become. We would happily keep all the bottles ourselves and enjoy them every now and then, but on the other hand, it was made especially for our 10th anniversary, and it is also really cool to be able to celebrate that with you as our customers, visitors, friends, acquaintances. And we really consider it an honor that Nevel has made this beautiful beer, which is also why we like to promote it.
A dark, sour, complex beer, with a wonderful flavor development. It has matured in barrels for 29 months, the last time together with cocoa shells that we once received from Tibor Szánto.
A dark beer matured in barrels for 29 months to which cocoa shells have been added. We received these from the late Tibor Szánto. He was a great chocolate maker from Hungary who unfortunately died very young. We admired his chocolates very much in their complexity and are still delighted that we were able to experience him up close, he provided two chocolate tastings with us. In this beer, everything actually comes together, and we like to toast the layering with it. Of stunningly complex flavors, of people, of life. The beautiful moments, and the sad ones. Everything that makes life life.
Nevel is the brewery of Mattias Terpstra. He works a lot with local products from Gelderland. They supply beer for restaurant de Nieuwe Winkel, among other things. Their beer Meander was awarded the best beer in the Netherlands. Nevel will unfortunately cease to exist as of 2025. From the beginning of the brewery, then also with co-founder Vincent, and also in the early days as brewery Katjelam, we have been very enthusiastic about all the beautiful things they manage to make. Thanks to their own wild yeasts, the beautiful additions that often come from the Food Forest in Groesbeek or are wild-picked, and above all about the beautiful flavors that then come together.
Beer lovers will all know Nevel, for those who don’t we will say that their beer often also has some (and sometimes a lot of) sourness in the taste. This beer certainly does too. Someone who is only used to pilsners will find that something to get used to, but as far as we are concerned it only contributes a lot to the taste experience and balance. Just like with good chocolate, by the way, where we of course appreciate a lot of chocolate for its fruitiness, which only comes to the fore when the makers keep at least a little bit of the natural sourness from the cocoa, and when that balance is just right the most beautiful things come about. But good to know in advance that this also applies to this (beautiful) beer.
About the taste we can also say that in addition to a beautiful rich sourness it also has a lot of complexity of flavors. The wood tones and certainly also the cocoa come forward in the smell and taste. Special because the cocoa shell has been specifically used, which is normally thrown away, or used as compost, or very occasionally to make tea, but has added so much here. Certainly also because the cocoa shell came from a specific cocoa from Venezuela, with a very pleasant strong smell and taste. Even though the large bag of cocoa shells stood in our cupboard for years after Tibor Szanto passed away, the smell and taste have hardly diminished during all that time, we have of course stored it with great care, and that is also clearly noticeable in the beer.
Tasting tip: do not drink it too cold. The beer has a best-before date of at least July 2029. It is expected that if you store this beer for a while, the taste will evolve. It may be worthwhile to store a bottle a little longer if you order several. Do this cool and dark, not too damp.
