A special edition of Mikkel Friis Holm – a chocolate made with/for David Shrigley. He makes (in Copenhagen) in the ‘Shrigshop’ a whole series of works of art with relatively simple graphic design and often also texts that are humorous or make you think.

The collaboration with the also Danish chocolate master Friis Holm is a logical one, when it comes to this chocolate bar of one of the designs (from 2020) specially created for the Shrigshop. And what a text. There are many texts and texts that go around the internet and are about chocolate, and should be funny or well-liked, but pass by so often that they are mainly a bit painful in our eyes. Add to that the many texts about how healthy or unhealthy chocolate would be, how good or bad, how addictive or not and then we find the text here a very nice one. Witty, funny, and also touching.

And especially nice how the creativity of art and the creativity of top quality chocolate find each other. Where cocoa from the large factories and in the supermarkets is mainly about producing (and selling) as much as possible for little money, for us good chocolate is precisely about the creative process, the beautiful flavors emerge from the cocoa, sit down and watch , and enjoy. Just as you can with a beautiful work of art. And just as one person prefers traditional painting and the other likes to be inspired by a modern canvas, you can also have preferences in chocolate for a more classic French-style chocolate (with a lot of cocoa butter) or a much more minimalist version. Exuberant and colorful (a chocolate with all kinds of intense flavor additions) or a chocolate that is completely balanced. Anyway, that’s why it’s extra fun as far as we’re concerned and we’d like to see this kind of collaboration more often.

Is chocolate the problem? Are you the problem? Is there a problem? Is the problem inherently within us? What’s the problem? In any case, you can also think about what is written on the packaging here. And a bite has already been taken from the drawing on the front. Did the artist do that consciously? Is it to make the chocolate more recognizable? Is chocolate more recognizable as chocolate when a bite is out? Are there any other deeper reasons behind the pictured missing corner? Enough to ponder, and meanwhile the chocolate itself is already half gone.

The chocolate itself is therefore a beautiful blend of Nicaliso, Chuno Triple and Indio Rojo. All cocoa varieties (via Ingemann) from Nicaragua that Friis Holm already works with. Now merged for a nice balance. Described by the makers as floral, red currant (from Indio Rojo) notes of chocolate (Chuno) and a red wine acidity (from Nicaliso).

Ingredients: cocoa beans, cane sugar, cocoa butter.

Allergy note: may contain traces of milk.
