Description
The Durian is famous, if only for the stench of the fruit. However, the taste of the pulp is very delicious, creamy and sweet and flavoursome. So very worthwhile.
Naive turned it into this dark milk chocolate, with 61% cocoa but a little milk powder for the balance. And so durian.
The maker goes on to say: “Cheese pretends to be a fruit, lying is no fun. Under spines hides an old Stilton, with the sneaky stench from the outside. If we turn our noses away, we accept you as you are, King of the Jungle with unwashed socks ?! No more shame, because this taste is great! Close your nose and you will notice how this duet with chocolate is meant. ”
Ingredients: cocoa, cane sugar, cocoa butter, milk powder, durian (6%)

Pairing suggestion from the maker: Coffee. Lightly roasted nutty coffee or slightly darker earthy coffee.
Fans of Formula 1 can see how Ricciardo and Verstappen break open a Durian here. You also know (if you did not know) what the fruit looks like. And although they are certainly not enthusiastic, the taste is really great as far as we are concerned. Very creamy and sweet, and with different fruit notes. But you may not have taste tests done by Formula 1 racers 🙂

Ik was bang dat ik Durian zou vinden stinken of het niet lekker zou vinden, gelukkig stinkt het niet en vind ik het lekker. Ik zou alleen willen dat ze er meer van instoppen!
De smaak is moeilijk te omschrijven. Het doet me het meest denken aan passievrucht, abrikoos en een beetje kaas oid.
Op de verpakking staat de smaak omschreven met bolletjes: het grootste bolletje ‘cheesy’, dan iets kleiner ‘fruity’ en dan het kleinst ‘musky’ en ‘nutty’.
Nouja ik vind het meer fruitig dan kazig smaken dus. Een unieke fruitsmaak. Maar dus wel subtiel.
Oja, er staat ook in de verpakking ‘overtones of hazelnut, apricot, caramellized banana and egg custard’. Ik vind het knap dat ze dit allemaal kunnen proeven.
Leuk om te proberen, maar ik probeer de volgende keer weer iets anders. 🙂

THIS BAR IS A FREAKING ARTWORK THROUGH AND THROUGH. From the beautifully intricate packaging art (design, colors, 3d embossing) to the wonderfully poetic words as you open the package, to the beautifully elegant plastic package inside, to the shape and design of the bar, as well as the taste… You get the unmistakeable impression that considerable thought, effort, and creativity has gone into this piece of work. Beautiful presentation.
As for the experience of eating it, I didn’t smell the durian at all — it smells like any other good quality chocolate bar. The texture is beautifully soft and smooth, not melting on the finger, but very easily on the tongue. Taste-wise, it is a very interesting journey. Accompanying what is a very good quality milk chocolate (with just the right balance of sweetness) is the underlying dominant and unusual nuttiness and cheesiness from the Durian fruit. I would like to describe this latter as an interesting combination of umami and stinky cheese flavor (almost like stinky socks). Weird description, I know, but if you’re a fan of stinky cheese, you probably know what I’m talking about. If you’re put off by this, maybe this bar isn’t for you. I am a lover of stinky cheese, and by extension this chocolate too. Back from socks to chocolate: there is also an underlying interesting bitterness (like the one from beer/hops) at the back of the tongue in the aftertaste. Not off-putting, but adding a very interesting dimension to this exquisite composition. The aftertaste lingers longer than many other bars too.
This bar isn’t for everyone, but if you’re a fan of unusual flavors and like experimenting with weird food, go for it. You will not regret!
