Where craft chocolate seemed to skip the entire continent of Africa a few years ago when it came to good cocoa, luckily this has changed.
Of course – we won’t see the chocolate makers of ‘our kind’ working with anonymous bulk cocoa, fortunately not, but (of course!) quality cocoa also comes from Africa, from which you can make the most diverse and beautiful chocolates. Where cocoa from Madagascar (with Akesson’s) had been ‘big’ for a while, and later the cocoa from Tanzania was used more and more, and cocoa from Congo (with Original Beans, Chocolatemakers and others) more often in the (digital or otherwise) On the shelves, cocoa from Uganda, via Latitudes Cacao (of which we also sell bars) has been on the rise lately.
And so the cocoa from Semulkiki (the name of the National Park in western Uganda – on the border with Congo) also reached Standout, who make their bean to bar chocolates in Sweden.
Taste notes described by the makers: Fruity, with notes of orange, peach and banana.
As far as we’re concerned, a very pleasant change in taste where the chocolate in your mouth ‘bounces back and forth’ between sweet and sour – and indeed all kinds of fruity associations arise.
